At Loberg Professional Dental Corporation, patients in and around the Laguna Hills community are able to enjoy a wide range of general, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry procedures. Dr. Leif Loberg and his team work closely with new and existing patients in the office to determine the best treatments for their specific and unique dental needs. For some patients seeking a fast and beautiful way to cover imperfections of the smile, porcelain veneers are often the best tool.
A porcelain veneer is a ceramic restoration. It is fabricated as a thin facing that is bonded over the front of a tooth for coverage. It is often used in aesthetic treatments to cover problems such as permanent staining, breakage, unusually shaped teeth, or even misalignment.
Porcelain veneers are incredibly popular for patients who want a long-term alternative to composite resin bonding. Composite resin bonding is often used in the same manner, though this clay-like material is placed onto the tooth and shaped. It is hardened and polished and can last a few years. However, it is susceptible to staining and will not last nearly as long as a porcelain veneer. Dr. Leif Loberg may suggest it as an affordable, short-term solution, but individuals seeking something that will last a decade or longer may be more interested in porcelain veneers.
The process of obtaining porcelain veneers is rather quick. Treatment starts with determination of candidacy. Most patients are proper candidates for porcelain veneers and can speak with their dentist about whether or not this is the best choice for their smile. Then, preparations begin. This involves the removal of a thin portion of enamel from the front of the tooth and then impressions. The impressions are sent out to a dental laboratory with specific instructions regarding the shape, size, and aesthetics of the new veneer. Patients may have a temporary veneer placed until their new one comes in approximately one to two weeks later. Then patients return to the dental office for the bonding of the veneer in place.
With proper care and attention, most patients can enjoy their new porcelain veneers for ten years. They need to maintain good oral health habits each and every day, and visit their dentist at least twice a year for cleanings and examinations. This will extend the longevity of their restorations as well as their natural teeth, allowing patients to reduce the risks of periodontal disease and even cavities.
