Everyone’s teeth are different. For this reason, dental implant recovery time varies from individual to individual.
Generally, the process from start to finish takes six to nine months. Most of this time is devoted to healing as the jawbone fuses to the surface of the implant. This natural process, known as osseointegration, can take up to six months. The Academy of Osseointegration (AO) says on average this step requires two to four months.
Dental implant recovery time may be nine months or even longer if extra procedures are needed. For example, if there is not enough bone in the jaw to support the implant, a bone graft may be necessary. It can take up to nine months for grafted bone to grow enough for the implant to be placed. If only minor grafting is needed, this extra step may be done at the same time the implant is placed.
AO reports healing time has decreased because researchers now know more about how bone attaches to titanium. The implant is typically made out of this metal. Research has advanced to the point where, in some circumstances, dentists can immediately connect the crown or prosthetic tooth to the implant the same day or soon after.
Typically, it takes two to four months before the restoration can be placed atop the implant and its connector (or “abutment”).
After each stage of surgery, soft foods may be recommended for 10 to 14 days as the surgical site heals. After the last stage – the placement of the restored tooth – it’s time to enjoy dental implants for a lifetime. Only minor adjustments may be needed as the adjoining abutment loosens with use.
Proper placement by Dr. Leif E. Löberg can ensure the extended life of a new tooth “built from the root up.” Proper care and hygiene is essential.
