Not all dental professionals in the state of California can administer conscious IV sedation. As its name suggests, this is a “middle-of-the-road” sedative. It is also what the public typically associates with sedation dentistry.
There are four levels of sedation. Each level addresses varying severity of fear. Some patients may be uneasy or anxious about visiting a dentist. Others may be terrified or panic-stricken by the mere thought of a dental appointment. Those with dental phobia will do anything to get out of an appointment. They may live with serious pain and obviously decayed teeth after years of avoiding the dentist.
On one end of the spectrum, minimal sedation involves nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) mixed with oxygen inhaled through a mask. Patients remain awake, but calm. On the other end of the spectrum, deep sedation and general anesthesia involve medications that either almost induce unconsciousness or do induce deep sleep.
While most dentists can administer minimal sedation via either laughing gas, the administration of moderate sedation is regulated by each state. The state of California has added more regulations to address the increasing number of pharmaceuticals and techniques on the market to sedate patients.
Dr. Leif E. Löberg and his team at Löberg Professional Dental Corporation have the continuing education requirements and experience consistent with American Dental Association guidelines to offer moderate sedation as a means of relaxing patients safely. Given intravenously, the Dental Board of California notes a qualifying course in conscious sedation must span at least 60 hours.
The benefits of this type of moderate sedation include:
